The Food Guide: 5 Revitalising Local Foods for Seasonal Changes

The monsoon season is almost over, and among other concerns, one can’t help but worry about the possibility of falling sick due to the changing weather. Besides marvelling at the rain-drenched surroundings and the shifting greys of the changing skies, all we can think about is what constitutes a fool-proof diet plan to revitalise our health when seasons change.

They say the languages, traditions and cuisines in India vary every few kilometres. With a population of over 1.3 billion people spread over 19,500 dialects, our country’s recipes are indeed like a culinary kaleidoscope. Taking Maharashtra as an example for this statement, we present a compilation of the tastiest and healthiest seasonal recipes of the state that you must try to stay on top of your health.

Bhardi

A mixture of roasted and ground pulses, dry fruits, rice, grains and wheat, Bhardi is an excellent recipe rich in carbohydrates, iron, Vitamin B and protein. Considering its immense nutritional value, this particular dish helps in weight gain and making growing kids physically strong. In addition, dry fruits are brain-boosting foods that improve memory, while fenugreek seeds (Methi) help in building a strong and healthy immune system.

Dink Ladoos

Popularly known as Dinkache Ladoos in Maharashtra, these ladoos have ingredients (edible gum, ghee and nuts) that provide warmth and energy to the body during winters. While they are an excellent source of nutrition for nursing mothers, they are not recommended for pregnant women as they produce heat in the body. However, these ladoos are delicious and have great nutritional value as they facilitate fast recovery for mothers who have just given birth.

Shevgyachi Bhaji

This vegetable side dish is made from moringa or drumstick leaves and is a powerhouse of immunity. Popularly known as a superfood, it is incredibly nutritious and is packed with vitamins, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Shevgyachi Bhaji is one dish that helps treat and prevent diseases like arthritis, diabetes or any other digestive disorders.

Karalyachi Bhaji

As kids, most of us cringed and cried about being force-fed karela due to its bitter taste. However, as adults struggling with lifestyle diseases, it is the right time to adopt this dish into our regular diets. A rich source of minerals and vitamins, it comes packed with iron, potassium and magnesium. It boosts weight loss and also has anti-histamine properties, which makes it an excellent source for respiratory health.

If you want to add some flavour to this dish, all you have to do is add a pinch of Goda masala to your Karalyachi Bhaji. This masala is a flavourful blend of spices, unique to Maharashtrian cuisine. Get your hands on this Maharashtrian masala from Aazol and watch your kids relish this delicious recipe.

Gavhache Dhirde

This is a simple whole wheat flour pancake that is healthy and tastes delicious too. A traditional Maharashtrian (breakfast) recipe, Gavhache Dhirde is made using jaggery and ghee. Cook this dish with Khapli or Emmer - long grain wheat with several health benefits. It has a low glycemic index and hence, helps keep blood sugar in control. It is gluten-free and lowers bad cholesterol. It is also rich in Vitamin B, magnesium and iron. If you want to savour its subtle, nutty flavour, get your hands on Aazol’s Khapli Gahu Peeth and Kaakvi (liquid jaggery) and enjoy the best of Aazol foods.
