From Chaklis, Chiwda to Bhakarwadi: Here's What Goes Into Making the Perfect Maharashtrian Faral For Diwali!
Diwali, the beautiful festival of lights, is just around the corner. Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali are much-awaited family celebrations in the Maharashtrian household. This is the perfect occasion to celebrate our traditions and teach our children more about our culture. This means that the Faral (snacks) that we have at home for Diwali are all traditional Maharashtrian ones. Some of these come from my Aaji's recipe book. I hope you try these at home and enjoy them with your family this Diwali.
Khobra Kaakvi Chikki - Khobra Kaakvi Chikki, made from coconut and liquid jaggery (kaakvi), is an all-time favourite in my household and is a must-have during Diwali. It is not only delicious but also rich in minerals and is the perfect snack bar.
Chakli - This deep-fried snack made of rice flour is a hit with the kids. It is crispy, has a long shelf life and is a handy tea-time snack post-Diwali. Chakli has several variations, but Bhajnichi Chakli (made with a rice flour and lentil flour mix) is my pick for Diwali Faral.
Dink Ladoo – Dink ladoo, made from edible gum, ghee, nuts, and jaggery, is perfect for Diwali. It's delectable and strikes the perfect balance between melt-in-the-mouth sweet and crunchy textures. It also gives warmth during the post-Diwali chilly season. However, Dink ladoo may be a bit labour intensive, and I prefer to order mine from an authentic Maharashtrian food store, Aazol.
Bhakarwadi - Here's another one of the Maharashtrian snacks that my family loves. The Bhakarwadi is made of alternate layers of gram flour dough and coconut-sesame filling. These are rolled, cut up and fried till crispy. The sweet, spicy flavour of Bhakarwadi is what makes it unique among the Diwali Faral.
Kuleeth Peeth Ladoo - I always end up making many Kuleeth Peeth Ladoos over Diwali. Given that my friends and family love this high-protein, nutritious ladoo, I never have any leftovers. The secret is to use some excellent quality horse gram flour like the one available on Aazol!
Chiwda - Who can refuse a portion of this crunchy fried rice flake snack! Add some roasted peanuts, coconut chips, and raisins, and you have the perfect Diwali Faral.
